Chlorhexidine-alcohol versus povidone iodinealcohol antisepsis for catheter-related infection prevention: an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial

چکیده
Introduction Catheter-related infections are common life-threatening healthcare-associated infections whose incidence can be decreased by improving the quality of care. Optimisation of skin antisepsis is essential to prevent short-term catheter-related infections. We hypothesised that chlorhexidine-alcohol was more effective than povidone iodine-alcohol as a skin antiseptic for preventing infections.

Cholorhexidine, octenidine or povidone iodine for catheter related infections: A randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND Protection of the catheter site by antimicrobial agents is one of the most important factors in the prevention of infection. Povidone iodine and chlorhexidine gluconate are the most common used agents for dressing. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of povidone iodine, chlorhexidine gluconate and octenidine hydrochloride in preventing catheter related infections. ...

To the Editor—We read with great interest the article ‘‘Guidelines for the Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-related Infections’’ in the May 2011 issue [1]. We commend the authors for their excellent extensive review of the literature and subsequent guidelines. These guidelines, however, recommend the use of ‘‘.0.5% chlorhexidine preparation with alcohol for skin antisepsis during CVC insert...
متن کاملAlcoholic Chlorhexidine or Alcoholic Iodine Skin Antisepsis (ACAISA): protocol for cluster randomised controlled trial of surgical skin preparation for the prevention of superficial wound complications in prosthetic hip and knee replacement surgery
INTRODUCTION Wound complications following arthroplasty are associated with significant impact on the patient and healthcare system. Skin cleansing prior to surgical incision is a simple and effective method to prevent wound complications however, the question of which agent is superior for surgical skin antisepsis is unresolved. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This cluster randomised controlled trial a...
متن کاملComparison of four skin preparation strategies to prevent catheter-related infection in intensive care unit (CLEAN trial): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND Catheter-related infection is the third cause of infections in intensive care units (ICU), increasing the length of stay in ICU and hospital, mortality, and costs. Skin antisepsis is one of the most prevalent preventive measures. In this respect, it would appear preferable to recommend the use of alcoholic povidone iodine or chlorhexidine rather than aqueous povidone iodine. However,...
متن کاملChlorhexidine and alcohol versus povidone-iodine for antisepsis in gynecological surgery.
BACKGROUND Surgical site infections (SSIs) cause severe morbidity and are associated with tremendous health costs. Skin antisepsis (cleansing) with chlorhexidine and alcohol solutions has demonstrated superiority to povidone-iodine in a variety of surgical interventions. Our objective was to determine if chlorhexidine and alcohol antisepsis protocol reduces the rate of SSIs in elective gynecolo...
